Stiwdio Clwyd is a national development studio that supports theatre-makers across Wales at every stage of their careers.
We give artists the space and structure to build skills, try out new ways of working, connect with others in the industry, and develop their craft in an environment that encourages experimentation, collaboration, and play. Stiwdio Clwyd is a home for the artistically ambitious, a space for creative, rigorous experimentation and exploration and a place to play seriously.
Stiwdio Clwyd is here to:
Support
professional theatre-makers in Wales to broaden their skills, rigorously reflect to improve their learning, and work collaboratively to overcome the challenges faced across the sector.
Connect
with other theatre-makers, companies and innovators through partnership work to enhance their knowledge and skills on a local, national, and international level.
Impact
the creativity of individual artists and theatre-makers to have a lasting legacy on the theatre ecology.
Stiwdio Clwyd is housed at Theatr Clwyd but is not limited to only supporting work that would fit within Theatr Clwyd’s programming.
This means that:
- It is not a commissioning organisation – we will not be commissioning or programming work.
- It is not a pipeline for Theatr Clwyd – we are not “auditioning” you or your work for Theatr Clwyd.
- It is not a space – we are not a physical studio or theatre space but hope to infiltrate different spaces – both virtual and physical.
- It is not regionally exclusive – Theatr Clwyd leads us, but we do not only serve the theatre-makers of North Wales. We encourage artists nationwide to get involved.
Stiwdio Clwyd’s Guiding Principles were created through dialogue with over 800 theatre-makers across Wales.
Our Priorities
Each year, Stiwdio Clwyd focuses on two strategic priorities to create meaningful change in Welsh theatre, aligned with sector needs. These are realised through flagship programmes that provide support and opportunities, complementing other artist development initiatives for layered impact.
In our first year, we will make a bold intervention on the theatre landscape and offer genuine support to theatre-makers in two key areas of need. Through Tearing the Roof Off and Sparks, we aim to help professional theatre-makers in ways that lead to long-term support and lasting change.
Our flagship programmes will be complemented by a diverse array of initiatives, events, partnerships and opportunities to support, connect and empower Welsh artists and theatre-makers. These will have a focus on inclusivity, innovation, access, development, and sustainability. They will work alongside, and in conjunction with, the work already being delivered by organisations across Wales, to deliver support to creatives Wales-wide.
It is important to recognize that we can can not do everything for everyone. We are excited to work in partnership with organisations across Wales and beyond who are already doing so much to support theatre-makers.
We are starting here. We hope to grow.
This Website
The Stiwdio Clwyd website is your platform to access support and development, a centralised hub for opportunities and resources, and a means to celebrate initiatives across Wales.
We want this to be a beneficial space for theatre-makers to find out about opportunities and events that can support their practice, to feel part of the Welsh theatre ecology.
It is – and will always be – a work in progress. We want it to be useful and responsive to artists. If you have a resource that you think is great and useful for other theatre-makers, let us know and we will try and share it. If you know of an event that might be of interest to other theatre-makers, post it. If you have an opportunity for theatre-makers, fill out a form and we can highlight it.
Who we support and how
Stiwdio Clwyd will support all forms of theatre-making – writers, directors, actors, producers, designers, technicians, stage managers, movement practitioners, etc… Some programmes will focus on specific areas and other will be a way for us to engage with theatre-makers of any discipline.
Some of the other upcoming programmes that we are really excited to share with you include Write With…, a collaboration with the Sherman Theatre, and Inspire, a series of on-line conversations about Artistic Leadership In Difficult Times.
We will continue to offer opportunities and events to theatre-makers across North Wales through our Local Artists Network at Theatr Clwyd, but we will also work in partnership with theatres and companies across Wales to support theatre-makers in their locality.
Stiwdio Clwyd is more than a space. It is an ethos to celebrate, challenge and nurture.
